HUNTING

THIS OPENING MEET. . The opening meet of the South Canteroury xium, yesterday at the ivenntis was iavoured with perieet weather ana can be looked back upon as one ot' the most enjoyauie held lor many years. Under a cloudless sky the grandeur of the scenery surrounaing the- country hunted was in itself suincient to compensate for any lack of sport that Jiu'ght' accrue to the deficiency of scent dictated by a sun doing great credit to sersell" in her autumn decline. That the hospitable welcome extended by the Master,'.Mr A. S. Ehvorthy, and his brothers gave a finishing touch to a sporting afternoon in the country was thoroughly appreciated by all. A* gathering of about 120 lunched at the Kennels and;before moving off to witness the first draw of the season, responded very loyally to Mr S. F. Smithsoit's call for cheers for the Master and liis wife. Mr Smithson, who has been an enthusiastic supporter of the Hunt since 1887, expressed a hope that the Master, who had held the position so creditably for 12 seasons, would continue to hold it until relieved by his son, whom he hoped would follow in the footsteps as Master of the South Canterbury Hunt. Mr A. S. Elworthy in acknowledging the kindly sentiments expressed by Mr Smithson thanked the farmers throughout the district for the way they so generously assist the sport of hunting by allowing their country to be hunted in a willing sporting spirit. . ■ . The sport of the afternoon was very good considering the scent was poor. Without any delay, a bare was found on Mr Georgo Shaw's farm, but was lost in the Kennels' plantations, after a fast mile across Mr T. J. Brosnan's and Mr James Nixon's properties. The next hare found shortly after on the Hadlow estate made a right-handed ring in one paddock, then left it for the Upper Washdyke road, which she stuck to for a quarter of a mile before turning left-handed into a plantation of Mrs Thomas'. After a little delay hounds pushed her out of this across the road into a paddock of Mrs Pringle's. After running through the garden she squatted on Mr Cameron's land, but was not allowed to rest long. When on foot" again she was obviously tiring and on the second attempt clambered up a-sod wall fence and made a right-handed circle over Mrs Pringle's country, eventually to be lost on Mr Cameron's farm after having been hunted' slowly but well for about two and a half miles: Another hare found on the Hadlow estate had not gone more than a quarter of a mile before she squatted, but on being quickly roused again doubled bank into the pack and was killed. Without delay another hare was found who gave the field a spin over three miles of the Hadlow estate before sbe was eventuallv IoH. On return in T to the Kennels, all pnrtonk of delicious afternoon I tea, and then left for their homes well '
