THE NICHOLAS CASE.

To the Editor of the "Timaru Herald." Sir, —Permit the committee to thank " Arrow" for his sympathetic letters regarding the Nicholas family. Although the particulars of the case, are probably wen-known to those who havo subscribed, yet, for the benefit of others interested a brief summary of the facts, as suggested by "Arrow", might be desirable. *--...,..-, Mr Nicholas having got into money difficulties •in Ashburton, sacrificed everything in an endeavour to make a fresh start. He first received employment in Qamaru for a.time,.and having lost that, came to Timaru some eighteen months ago, where for about a year, unable to get work at his trade (Oootmaking), lie did his best to make ends meet by. taking odd jobs as a labourer.- The family of six young children were delicate. Three of them in September had to be removed to the Talbot Hospital, on account of scarlet fever. The father about the same time fell ill, and was up at the public hos T pital. Recovering from his illness, he at last obtained permanent employment from Mr Penrose, when sickness again laid him aside in February, and a fortnight ago he died. To add to her troubles Mrs Nicholas a month ago -again had the whole family down with , measles. Till the present ti'ne, with th«> liplo of sympathetic neighbours, and latterly of the Charitable Aid Board, Mrs Nicholas has struggled on, but now, that the breadwinner has been taken away, it has been deemed advisable to enlist the sympathies of the public. Mrs Nicholas, not being in good ' health, will not for some months, be able to tin mitVh for a livine. A cmod number of subscriptions have already been received, and further help will be willingly accepted.—l am, etc., CLARA I. SHTRTCLIFFE, Secretary for Nicholas Fund.
