CHESS AND CHARITY.
Toithe Editor of the "Timaru Herald." ■ Sir, —Having seen it suggested in print that the municipality suould provide a free room tor .the chess players or 'lfinaru, and having heard that the Mayor has been approached on the subject, I must as u ratepayer enter an emphatic protest against the municipality providing a tree room for any particular clique who ought to be able to pay for their own amusements. . I understand that a Mr Geo. Wilson is the leading figure in asking for this charity, and Ahat this Mr Geo. Wilson is not even a ratepayer nor even a householder; and that he has no stake in the town to justify or qualify him •in making so free in suggesting that the municipality should provide free rooms on a charitable basis for chess and card playing. I think it hardly necessary to suggest that the Borough Council should not comply with the request, as I have sufficient faith in their , common sense to feel confident that '- they will treat it with the contempt which it deserves.—l am, etc., RATEPAYER.
