MYSTERIOUS DEATH.

DOUGLAS HARDIE CASE. Per Press Association. CHEISTCHURCH, March 30. The inquest concerning the death of Andrew Douglas Hardie, aged 70 years, whose body was found lying outside a cottage at Dudley Creek last Sunday week, was resumed this afternoon by Mr H. AV. Bishop, District Coroner, and a juryWhen the inquest opened last week niedica 1 evidence was given to the effect that the old man's spine was dislocated; that eight ribs on the right side of the body were broken and penetrated the lungs; that the injuries were all ante mortem, and might have been caused by a motor car striking the man's back and side. There were no external marks of violence, and if he was struck by a car it was possible that there would be;: no marks, because death followed so quickly. After the blow the man would not have been able to walk from the scene of the accident to the place where the body was found, a distance of fifteen yards; that the man was absolutely incapable of stooping, and, therefore, could iiot place a kit under his head. Further enquiries werp then made by the police. , To-day the driver and occupants of a taxi-cab which passed the locality on the night the man was found, stated that they neither saw the man nor felt the shock. An open verdict was returned.
