There was a very fair audience at the Assembly Kuonis last night, to \vjtHiess a practical demonstration oi the liiethods of, work as carried out.by tlie Tiinaru branch of the St. John Ambulance Association. The Mjarine Band played a few selections bofore the display was given. His .'Worship the Mayor, Mr Jas. Craigio; presided. was a noble one and worthy of the heartiest support, of the public, in whose i interest the work was primarily under- . taken. . He, 'would have the pleasure of presenting certificates and. inr.dals to members of the society, '■.•who. had won thenij'and he was glad the occasion took place in public, for the recipients were worthy of honour. Owing to the excellent teaching of Dr Gabites and ntZiers, the men had passed their, examinations with great credit. The people ijf Timaru were deeply in,debt to the society, who had spent time and money also for the public weal, and he hoped that on Saturday, when ; a collection, was going to be taken up for the purchase of _ equipment, the public would :show their appreciation. After a vocal item by Mr J. Holdgate, squad A, No. 1 of the Ambulance Society gave a demonstration of bandaging on a subject who was supposed to have sustained a fractnre of the thigh and a wound on the forehead. The work was quickly :and neatly done and the operators: re•cejved a "hearty round of applause, as they carried out the patient on the stretcher. Mr H. Holdgate rendered a flute solo in good/style, and then 15 squad No. 1 got to/work on a supposed victim of a tailway accident, who had been unfortunate enough to have his left leg severed below the knee and also had serious scalp wounds. This squad was as. expeditious as the former one and more applause followed their demonstration. Mr 13. de Looze's vocal contribution was so well received that he/ was obliged to appear again in response to an encore, and then more ■ambulance work was done by A squad. No. 2 team, who alleviated the sufferings of a patient who had severed the artery of his right hand and badly sprained his ankle. A well stimulated look of anguish on the face of this particular patient added to the realism of the occasion. A song by Mr Fenton, and then Fireman Archer gave an exhibition of rescuing . a suffocated man from a burnmg building,'hoisting the ' unconscious form on to hissbonlders by the method known as the "fireman's lift," and carrying the rescued one down a laHdcr, when the ambulance corps at once got to business and resuscitated the suffocated one by artificial respiration. Mr Coombs' violin solo received a well merited round of applause and then the chairman handed out the certificates to the following—Messrs F. A. Ellis. T. R. Harris, H. M. Robertson, J. T. Denniston, C. W. H. Archer, XV. C. Eden, T. Teape, E. G. Hunter, O. H. Webb, M. F. Commons, E. J. Dash, J. Dunnill, M. Fitamauriee, J. <"!ordnn. R. R. Graham, H. J. Nelson, J; Hall, "W. Mintrom, W. Keay. J. I Huglison, A. G. Foster and "W. .T. Harris (special nedallists for 1908).
