TIMARU BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The following officers reports' were dealt with at a committee, meeting of the Borough Council on Friday-night, and will be submitted' for adoption to the meeting of the Council wliicli is to be held to-night. The manager reported that at the abattoirs there were slaughtered 155 cattle, 1314 sheep and lambs, 11 pigs, and 11 calves. Of these, three head of cattle and two sheep were condemned as unfit 'for human consumption. The borough overseer reported that metalling, rolling, and blinding Elizabeth street, had been completed..Advantage had been taken of the fine weather .to do a lot of top dressing of asphalt footpaths, but the work had to be stopped on account of a ; shortage of suitable sand. Shingle from Dashing Rocks was being delivered by the engine and/trucks. Trafalgar street was finished, and Hewlings street was in hand. A large amount of grass chipping and cleaning had been done in 'Queen, ■ Theodocia,. Sophia, -Elizabeth, Brown and Napier Streets, and on Avenue and Wai-iti roads and Craigie Avenue. Quarry screenings had been converted into asphalt as they came to hand. Specifications had been' prepared' for carting 300 cubic yards of shingle, , and tenders called. During February, 104 trucks of broken metal and- three trucks of screenings had. been received, from the quarry. Building permits- had been issued, for four new buildings and eight additions 'at an estimated - cost of £1521. Barnard street from Woollcombe to George was completely worn out, and lie aske'd the Council whether it should be • metalled or maintained with shingle ■ until the drainage was laid down. He asked for instruction re Craigie Avenue repairs. The contractors for extending- the concrete inverts and road culverts were making , good progress and -a very good job. The contractor for the concrete kerb and channel was making satisfactory progress. Five applications for water had been dealt with." . The water race had been attended "to. The screening well at the .reservoir had been emptied and cleaned out.

- Tlie sanitary inspector reported in detail on house to house inspections lie had made in ten streets. The nuisances caused by. keeping a horse on a small section near a dwelling, hedge encroachments, and ' the accumulation of rubbish on sections • had been- abated. ' Tbje drainage from pome eight or ten houses in Woodlands Road, Rhodes and Archer Streets, runs into the gully which leads from. Woodlands Road to Hassell Street, and becoming stagnant, created a very unhealthy condition. He suggested that an open drain be cut through, which would greatly improve matters until permanent drainage, arrangements could be made. One case of infectious disease had been notified •within the Borough during the past fortnight, and he had fumigated a room in. which a' ease of- infectious disease had existed. Since last meeting he had inspected and tested 24 sewer connections, and sanitary plumbing in six houses. ■

' The curator of the Domain reported "that the usual routine work in the • Domain, Craigie .Avenue, Alexandra Square, and smaller squares had been carried on successfully. The fences in the -Domain were now being cut and plantations cleaned. The stone to be used for widening the, approach to Caroline Bay from the harbour, had been delivered, and some extra labour would be required for this work. Referring to- "the request of the V-.M.G.A. to be allowed to use the Domain for hockey, the curator recommended that the request be declined , as if played' on the young grass would not have*a fair chance. He asked that the committee of the full Council pay the Domain a visit before the end of the month. .
