The white-pine borer has been the cause of a good deal of expense to owners of buildings in Canterbury, and on the other hand a cause of employment to builders. The little pest lias now given a job to lawyers, in Wellington. Last week a lawsuit was commenced, in the Supreme Court there, over a matter, at the bottom of which was the borer. A, firm of builders contracted to remove a school building for the Education Board, by cutting it into sections, transporting, and re-erecting it. The contractors undertook to "replace all decaped timbers." Looking at the building as it stood there did not seem to be much " decayed" timber in it, and they took the job at £286. When they came to cut into it, however, they found the timber so much worm-eaten that it was unfit to re-erect, ancl the. local authority, the Upper Hutt Town Board, refused to permit its re-erection on the ground of the worm-eaten condition of the timbers. The Board ordered the contractor to proceed and the contractor could not. Eventually the Board took the matter in hand and erected a new building, using some material that had been obtained by the contractors. The latter claimed £4ll, for material and work done.
