The Hon. T. Mackenzie has informed Mr T. Buxton, M.P.,. that he will be in Teinuka on Friday, March 12, and will inspect the proposed Te Moana scenic reserve on ■ the following day. Constable Baird, who is to be stationed at Waimate, is to take the, place of Constable Maloney, who is' under notice of transfer to Akaroa, whither-' he goes in about a week's time. .
The many friends of Mr E. R. Guinness will be glad to learn that lie is recovering satisfactorily . from the effects of a serious operation which he has recently undergone. A Gore message says that the Board of Governors last night appointed Mr Hunter, of Stratford, headmaster of the Gore High School. There were 25 applications for the position 1 . •Mr F. S. Norrie, of tlie Timaru Dairy Company, and Mr J; Burns, of the Temuka Butter . and Cheese - Factory, represented Soujbh Canterbury at the Dairy Conference' l held at Lyttelton on Thursday last. Yesterday, the boys of the Timaru High School assembled'to bid good-bye to Cecil Mai thus, who 'is leaving the school to attend Canterbury College. The headmaster referred to the assistance Malthus had rendered to ; tlie school by his constant application to work, his keen • enthusiasm iii sport, and by his good. character and conduct. After three hearty cheers had been given, Malthus replied, wishing tlie school every success in scholarship and sport. Malthus entered - the school in 1903 on a junior scholarship, and, later won a senior; scholarship, in each case being well up on " the list. His school career has been" a long succession of prize winnings, and twice in succession lie lias'won the Cain bequest prize essay. Now lie has -wound up his school career .by winning a senior national scholarship. , Timaru. should be proud of, a High School that produces lads of such a stamp. A number of senior boys assembled at the express to bid a last farewell.
Mr Frank Robertshaw, who has teen connected with ; the Dresden Piano Company for the past twenty-three years, is in Timaru, having come up here from Dunedin for a lew weeks.
There passed au;ay in Timaru last Thursday a very respected resident in the person of Mr W. J. Campbell, engineman New Zealand .railways. He had been stationed in Timaru for a considerable number of years-, and had been a diligent worker. He was always foremost in bringing forward anything that was for. the betterment of the condition of the workers as a whole, ;and he had the respect of every fellow-worker in Timaru. His death, after a very short illness, east quite a gloom over all those who knew him. Letters of condolence and telegrams of sympathy have been received from all over : the colony; wreaths have been sent by the Timaru railway men, and also from the Enginedrivers, Firemen's and Cleaners' Association, Christeirurch, also a letter of condolence from the Timaru branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants. His funeral takes place'to-morrow, when no doubt a large number of friends will follow , his remains to their last resting j place. He leaves a wife and a large family-to mourn his loss, one son, Mr Val Campbell, being a railway fireman at Fairlie.
