TRAMWAYS.
A MAYOR'S APPEAL. Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, March 4. A considerable amount of interest is taken locally in the question of tramways, for the construction of which Sir Joseph Ward held a concession up to last Sunday. The matter was brought up to-day by a deputation of Mavors and Councillors to the Premier. The Mayor of Invercargill said that the Councils were being worried by ratepayers wanting to know whether the tramways were going on. The Mayor promised to meet the Mayors of boroughs interested, and discuss the matter with them. He deprecated pin-pricks in connection with the scheme. Every little thing he said had been magnified and made to appear an offence, and much more inK portant than it really was. So far as he was concerned, if the people of the town wished to undertake a very heavy obligation they could do it, all the pin-pricks that had been going on here had not made things particularly sweet for him. He regarded the tramway undertaking as likely to . confer enormous benefits on the town, and he found that instead of his action being appreciated, many people were trying to discredit him and to create a wrong impression. Nobody was putting his hand in his pocket but himself. All the delays which had taken place would have been avoided if it had been possible. .
