SUCCESSFUL APPEAL

- A- meeting of', the .New iJeal and Trotting Association was held in Christchurch on Wednesday, '.when Mr H. Reynolds/ starter, : appealed; against the decision of the South' Canterbury Trot-ting-Club, in fining him £2 -for failing to report that a horse- named King LynUiad been a non-starter in a nice at the club's recent meeting. His contention was that, following tie usual practice, he had started all _the horses handed over to him by the clerk of the course. The correspondence showed that the horse in "question had only left the saddling paddock as the last horse left the mark, president, quoting the rule on the subject, said that lis a matter of fact the horse named had never been officially a 'starter. Although there was no rule dealing with- his duties,, it was the recognised practice for the clerk of the course to take charge :.of y tho horses after they were weighed out by the clerk of tlie scales, and hand ihein over to-the' starter.! It seemed' to him ' that the stewards': had' acted wrongly. After a.'brief discission, it was decided to uphold Mr Reynolds appeal. : A "suggestion, made for .-an amendment of the rules,- so" as to deal with • tlie. question, was inoted, for- vwerenc'o to ; the • next conference lhe South Canterbury'' Trotting Club applied for a "permit to use the totahsator at future meeting.?. It was decided to inform the club that the matter was one for the Trotting Conference to deal with.
