SWIMMING

SCHOOLS' COMPETITION

I The fourth annual swimming championships for the public schools of the 1 district were, decided in the Coronation 1 Baths on Saturday afternoon. The weather was perfect, and the large programme of events was got off without a hitch of any kind, under the able superintendence of Messrs R. Grant, J. G. Gow, G. Dalglish and Collins, who acted as starter and judges. 1. The entries were very numerous, which necessitated that most- of the items had to be run in. heats. The spectators con : sisted of school boys and girls,- but a few adults were present, - including Mr John Jackson*-chairman of the" Education Board, and Mr Howell, chairman iof the High School Board. On the whole the races were very exciting, the ..bulk of the finishes being very close and great enthusiasm was displayed by the spectators, who encouraged their favourites with vociferous cheers. The schools competing were, Timani Main and' South, Waimataitai, Marist Boys School, Geraldine and Pleasant Point. Teimika, through some error in the nominations was unfortunately barred from competing. The Board's Shield was- won easily by the Marist School, who put up the creditable score of 14" points, with Waimataitai second, 4 points, Timaru Main and Geraldine third, witli 3 points each. Another event was the 50 yards championship of South Canterbury, which was won by E. Holdgate, Timaru Main, after a finely contested race. At the conclusion of the programme Mr John Jackson presented the prizes to the winners and a very interesting afternoon's entertainment came to a close about 3.30 p.m. The following are results: — SHIELD EVENTS.--50 Yards Breast Stroke.—First Heat—Six competitors. A very close finish. Time 26 2-osec. ,-100 YARDS.—Nine competitors.—P. O'Meeghan (Catholic) 1, P. Fitzgerald (Catholic) 2, S. Farnie (Geraldine) 3, Won by two yards, only, a few inches between the other placed boys. 25 YARDS BACK STROKE.—Five competitors. First Heat.—F. McGrath (Catholic) 1, H.
