BRASS BAND CONTEST.
Per Pres' 5 ! Association. , * HASTINGS, Feb. 26. The E flat horn competitions resulted: Tavlor (Newton) 8G points 1, J. May (Hastings) 81 points 2, B. May (Hastings) 80 points 3. There were eight competitors. The tweltli annual meeting of the North Island Brass Bands' Association opened' this morning, Mr M. Cohen, presiding. * All the affiliated hands are represented. The, business on the order paper will occupy the whole day. Last evening "the first, test, A and B grades, was held on the racecourse. The grandstand and lawn wore beautifully illuminated by electric light, and splendid weather prevailed. The attendance was splendid, fully 2000 people being present. Six B grade bands and three A 'grade bands came up for the judge's decision, and the test selection grade was "Songs of Scot-
laud," and in B grade "II Crociato in Egitto." The following are awards maximum points. 200):—11 grade—Hastings, 163; Petone ,160; Gisborne, 150; Stratford, 146; Hawera, 140; Manaia, 135. As was expected in the A grade, Wanganui" Garrison were an easy first, being allotted 194 points. Newton (Auckland) were second with 181 points, and Palmerston North third with 178. The judge remarked that this test was the best lie had heard in the Honrinion. He had not heard the winning band before, and was very plesjsed to have had the opportunity of coming to Hastings to hear them. The solos had been exceptionally good, and he would have liked to have given full marks, but slips were made.
