Castles, a well-known singer, was drying her hair, when a celluloid comb she was wearing took lire:' Miss Amy Castles extinguished the flames. Both were burned, b"M; fortunately 1 neither was disfigured, and nothing worse than a severe shock resulted. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Feb. 26. Inspector Cullen has received the following telegram from the constable, at Papakimf:—A labourer named Alfred Francis and his son, 31 years of age, were drowned -near "Waymouth yesterday evening while fishing. The son accidentally fell out of the boat', and the father jumped in to- rescue him. /.Both were'drowned before the eyes of Mrs Francis, who was also an occupant of the boat: A large number of (Settlers are dragging for the bodies. "WANGANUf, Fob. 2(5. George Gibbons, aged 22, whose parents reside .hi South Duiicdin, was drowned in the river this morning while bathing. A man named- Alexander Govan, about 56 years of. age, residing at Burnsidc, died, suddenly to-night.
