S.M., with Captain Sundstrum arid Captain Forbes as. nautical assessors, was begun to-day to investigate rhe circumstances : attending the collision between the oil launch Maheno and the steamer Matariki in Otago harbour on January 28th. The proceedings were instituted by the Collector of application for anenquirv set forth that the cause of the casualtv. as far as he had ascertained, tras-that the master, of the Maheno. or person in charge of her. was guilty ot negligence in navigating Ins vessel at the time of the collision, by which the Maheno sustained material damage. The Collector of-Customs said that the Government did,>. not .. consider the damage* to the vessels a very' material lk>int,"'but regarded 'it as of extreme importance that the safety of passengers should not be jeopardised. The captain of the Maheno (Louis Mathiosnn). and steersman (William Thomas Nash), gave evidence. On the morn--in« in qtiestion both boats were due to leave Dunedin' about 10 o'clock. Iho Maheno cast off a minute or two before the Matariki. which was nearer the entrance to the basin, and moved out at right angles to the wharf, in order to turn round. The Maheno also swung out intd the basin. The Maheno's starnoard engine failed at a critical moment, iind the collision between the two boats occurred. The enquiry will be continued to-morrow.
