IMPROVEMENTS AT TEMUKA.

NEW SHOPS. The disastrous fires that-have swept through the business portions of 'iemuka, during the past year or two, have had one good effect in that, they have cleared away a number of old and unsightly wooden buildings, which' have given place to up-to-date edifices more in keeping with a progressive town. One block of buildings, which was destroyed by fire, has given place to a large and handsome row of slices, the whole block being known as Hayes' Buildings. The designer and architect for the work is Mr H. Hall of this town, and he is to be congratulated on the work he has turned out, the buildings being extremely attractive and internally convenient. Hayes' Buildings are erected on the site of the shops formerly occupied by Mr Carl, chemist, Mr Jacobs, and M.r=Vincent, saddler, which were destroyed by fire. It comprises two large shops, built of brick, relieved with cement facings, each with a frontage of ]Bft. to King street. The walls are 12ft. in height and the premises run back a distance of 42ft. The northern shop is occupied by Mr Carl and is divided I into three parts. The walls are match | JiDed and the 'ceilings panelled and both walls and ceiling are painted white, picked out with a delicate green. The front room measures 18ft. and .16ft., and it is fitted up in a handsome manner with counter, cupboards, drawers, shelves, and all conveniences in an exceedingly up to date and convenient manner, and presents a good appearance. At the rear of this is the consulting room 12ft. x 10ft., and behind this again is the store room 18ft. x 16ft. This room is also fitted ufi with ample shelving and water is laid on. The other shop in the buildings is occupied by Spillane Bros., cycle agents, etc. The front show room is 18ft ; x 17ft., with a height of 12ft. and both are painted in similar tints to Mr Carl's shop. A handsome counter of figured riniu runs across the showroom and at the south end of the shop a small place is partitioned off for office purposes, by a screen glazed with. Muranese glass, in ornamental panes. Behind the front apartment is the workshop, 24ft. x 18ft., lined with tongued and grooved stuff and painted white with a brown dada. Excellent lighting arrangements have been made, and the whole place is fitted up in an up to date manner with all the necessary appliances for carrying on the trade. At the rear is erected a large shed of. wood and iron for storage of agricultural implements, etc. The front windows of both shops are of plate-glass, eight feet high to transome, by 10ft. wide, and above the transome is Muranese glass. The doors are uniform with the windows. The window back in Mr Carl's shop is of Muranese glass, in sliding sashes of kauri, above the sashes being Muranese glass in diamonds and square shaped panes,' and the windows look exceed.ngly well. To the south of Dr Hayes shops is the block known as Edwards' Buildings, a two-storied brick edifice, also designed by Mr H. Hall. This i 3 also divided into two shops and has a frontage of about 30ft., and runs back 54ft. The walls of the ground floor are 12tt„, and of the second floor lift. 6in. In the lower storey, the windows of plateglass reach from ground to girder, and are about 10ft. high. The northern shop is divided into three parts—shop, 28ft. by loft., fitting room, and work and store room, etc. The walls are all match lined and painted. The southern shop is divided into shop or show room, 28ft. by loft., and two other large rooms. The show-room will be fitted up with large counter, glass show cases, etc. The window baek is fitted with silverised plate glass in kauri sliding sashes. . Upstairs at present is one large room 28ft. square. This Mr Edwards intends to utilise for his dressmaking department, and it is lighted from front and back, and also by one of Wade's patent skylights. Access is gained by a staircase leading from Mr Edwards' present shop. A handsome bull-nosed verandah of glass and iron runs the full length of the building, and adds much to its appearance. Mr H. Hall is also the architect of "Dr Hayes' new private hospital which is being built on' the site and in the same style as the former building which was destroyed by fire.
