Mr D. Grant, of Gray's Hills, goes Home by the lonic. Rev. W. Baumber left for Wellington yesterday to attend the Wesleyan Conference.

The Hon. T. Mackenzie, accompanied by his private secretary (Mr L. E. Johnson), passed through Timaru by. the first express for the North yesterday, en route to Wellington. Earl Stanhope, who is visiting New Zealand for the purpose, principally, of acquainting himself with the social and political conditions prevailing, passed through Timaru by the first express for the South yesterday. Mr. J. Mahoney, member for _ the Levels County Council for Gleniti riding, told a friend that he must resign his seat on the Council, as he intends to settle in Australia.

Mrs Eliza Walters, widow of the late Mr W. Walters, of Papakur, died at Auckland on Saturday, aged S3 years. Another old resident of Auckland ■ who died on the same day was Mrs Henderson, wife of Mr Adam Henderson, of Devonport; aged 75 years. Mr A. G. Bartlett, also an old settler, died on Sunday; aged 91 years. Mr. S. Mellows, who has been selected for the post of librarian for the Public Library, Timaru, came up from Dunedin yesterday to introduce himself to the committee and see the library buildins:, and the stock in the Institute. He was net by the Mayor and other members of the provisional committee, who showed him round. The committee's " first impression " of thenselection was a quite favourable one.
