TECHNICAL EDUCATION.

♦ FAIRLIE ASSOCIATION. Report of the Fairlie Technical Association for the year ending December 31st, 1908, to be presented at the an~nual meeting next Saturday evening.— •' The managers of the Fairlie Technical Association have much pleasure in presenting their first annual report. Towards the end of 1907 £33 19s 6d was subscribed by local bodies and townspeople interested in technical work, and the Government subsidy having been received, the Association was in a good financial position to commence work. The following were the classes conducted during the year:— "Dressmaking.—This class was carried on by Miss Fee through three terms of thirteen weeks each, and did very good work, there being an average attendance throughout of twelve pupils. '•Cookery.—Considerable difficulty was experienced iu getting a cookery room fitted up, and consequently the commencement of this class was delayed till the end of May. The class, which ran for two terms of twelve weeks, started well, but towards the end of the session the attendance was not well maintained. This year it is suggested to conduct the first term in the autumn, and the second in the spring, holding it as an evening class, as the time it was originally held was very unsuitable.

" Millinery.—A class was held towards tlie end of the year, and was fairlv well attended.

• "It is to be hoped that the abovementioned classes will be continued throughout the coming season, and that it strong effort will be made to conduct classes in wool classing, painting. and blacksmithing. " Finmce. —As will lv» seen from the balnnce-slieet, the position of the Association is very sound, as it. has a prod it balance of £SO 8 s 3d in the Pest Offine Savings Bank, while £8 lis is outstanding in Government grants, this making a total credit of £SB 19s 3d. "In conclusion, the managers trust that the public will do their best to support the classes during the coming session. They wish to thank the Mackenzie County Council, the Mackenzie Agricultural and Pastoral .Association, and those gentlemen who have so liberally contributed towards thf> funds of the Association." The items of the balance-sheet were: —Receipts—Fees £2B, voluntary contributions £34 4s, Government grants £79 Bs, sundries £8 4s; -total. £149 17s.
