FIRES.
FIRE NEAR TEMUKA. At an early hour on Friday morning n fire broke out in the residence of Mr J. Jack, on McNair's road, and completely destroyed the house and contents. Mr Jack and family retired about 9 p.m. on Friday, when all was apparently safe, and about 1 a.m. Mrs and Miss Jack, who occupied the,front bedroom, were aroused by a suffocating sensation and a crackling noise. They alarmed the father and son in an adjoining room, and it was discovered that the kitchen was in flames. With tlie assistance of Mr T. Washington, a neighbour, they managed to save the piano, but everything else was lost. The house was the property of Mrs J. C. Smith, of Lismore, and was insured for £IOO in the Royal office. Mrs Jack's furniture was insured for £6O, and the piano for £4O, in the National office.
