The "Argus" of tlip Ist, inst., devotes a couple of columns to a description ol the results of a number of bores put down to test the limits, depths, and thickness of a seam of coal that lias been found in the vicinity or AVoolomai. on the eastern side of Western Port, which lies cast of Port Melbourne Heads. The field has been proved over 3 miles long niitl "smiles wide, but those arc not its limits. The bores cut seams of 3ft. to 9l't., at depths of 100 to fiCOft., and the quality of the coal is said to he little; inferior to Newcastle. The field can he lapped by a branch railway of. 12 or 1(5 miles, and if a large coal industry is opened up, a shipping port can be made for it at Anderson's Inlet, not far away. At present Victoria imports about 700,000 tons of coal annually.
