S.C.J.C. A committee meeting of the South Canterbury Jockey Club was held last night. Present:—Dr C. E. Thomas (in the chair), Messrs H. Lowry, E. R. Guinness, R. L. Orbell, E. H. Reid, C. H. Gresson, A. S. Elworthv, A. Scott, and G. A. Cray. The chairman reported that Mr Pringle had thrown up his contract owing to an error made by Jiis clerk. The emergency committee had met and decided to return him his deposit, and had accepted Mr Foster's, the nest lowest tenderers offer, viz.— £202 10s for Xos. 1 and 2 contract and £7114s 6d for No. 3. The work was now well advanced. 'Detail correspondence was received and dealt with. Tenders
were received for a new jockey's board and Mr Foster was the successful tenderer at £2B 18s. A long discussion as to the advisability of working the board from the back took place, many members holding that the board should, if possible, be worked from the front. It was resolved that the erection be set hack say, 2 feet 6m. from the course proper, and be worked from the front, and that a guard rail be put up. The chairman reported that the secretary had suggested that a dial clock 2ft. 6in. in diameter be placed on the of the judre's box facing the stand ■with the words "the next race will start at" painted on it. The hands being moveable, would be adiusted immediately after each race. This would do away with the side erections previously attached tp the jockey's board, ' and would leave the latter clear of everything except the jockeys names, and as it was to be erected a chain nearer th*> public it should bp read and satisfactory to all. The idea was approved. It was decided the privileges be tendered for and that the Marine Band be engaged to play at the autumn meeting.
