COLLIEBY EXPLOSION.
MANY MEN ENTOMBED. GREAT LOSS OF LIFE. Press Association-By Telegraph-Copyright LONDON, Feb. 17. A colliery explosion occurred at West Stanley pit, Durham. One hundred and forty men are entombed, and a tongue of flame has destroyed the shafting. There is no egress, but rappings have been heard since tlio explosion, suggesting that men in one of the foiir seams are still alive.
Out of 147 me nentombed 37 have been rescued. It is feared that the remainder have perished. The majority of the survivors were saved tlirough remaining in a by-way until the gases cleared away.» Many bodies were badly burned and mutilated.
