AMUSEMENTS.

VAL VOUSDEN. To-night at the Theatre Royal, Val Vousden will present his clever' entertainment for the last time, and there is every indication that a large audience will he present. This popular entertainer has been always appreciated by Timaru theatregoers, and people who seldom or never visit the theatre, may be seen at his entertainment. He will give many new items, both in character assumptions and ventriloquial comicalities. ERNEST TOY. At his concert on Wednesday evening, in the Theatre Royal, Ernest Toy will play a varied programme that should appeal to all sections of the community. For the grand opera patron, the' " Faust Fantasia" of Gou-nod-Sarasate; for the student and teacher, two movements from the Mendelssohn Concerto (which nevertheless have a charm which is patent to the most unmusical); for those who prefer music not too deep, but full of melody and brightness, the "Ave Maria" of Mascapni, Pierne's Sererade and the "Witches' Dance,"' by Bazsini, all pieces played here by Kubelik. To the cosmopolitan in taste, the v""gramme offers infinite variety, and F.rnest Toy should bo at his best. Mi«s Lilian Toy, who will supply t' lo accompaniments, - has been trained in the continental schools, awl is oossessed of that.rare gife of sympathy so necessary to the true accompanist. Mr Toy has been fortunate in securing the services of Madame Josephine Ottlee, who' has just arrivsd from London, and made a successful debut at Christchurch on Thursday last. The "Press" of-12th February, speaks as follows of her singing:—"Her voice is full, resonant, and sympathetic in quality, and has a good range. Her phrasing and execution were exceedingly artistic, and she displayed a quality not often so marked, viz., careful and successful attention to light and shade."
