CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
A meeting of the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce was held on Friday evening; presen t-.—Messrs \V. Priest (chairman); J. 1'- Newman, V. C. Turnbull, 11. Eaton, T. D. Wing, W. Penrose, K. G. Turner ami C. *. Eraser, secretary. Apology was made for the absence of Messrs M. White, and G. S. Cray. It was reported that a differential rate existed on wool railed from Fairfield. The railage from Fairfield to Lyttelton was 6d per bale whereas the freight to Timaru although the distance was practically the same was three times as much. Mr Newman undertook to prepare a statement showing all such discrepancies, and in the meantime action in the matter was postponed. Attention was drawn to a complaint that cheese had to be railed to Lyttelton from Tcmuka owing to the grader not being available, it was resolve J that the Temuka Cheese Company be requested, to supply all information bearing on the matter to the Chamber's 'iraiisport Committee, who would go thoroughly into the matter and report to next meeting. The Grain Sub-Committee reported that they had met and suggested that the following questions be submitted to the consideration of the Chambers of Commerce in the South Island: —(1) Shall sacks be pail for extra?' (2) If so, what prices are to be paid for the various sizes viz., 48in. by 26£ in., 46in. by 24Jin ? (3) That it be a suggestion that all buyers purchase all farmers' produce sacks included. A very spirited discussion lasting over an hour, arose on the matter. It was finally decided that the matter be referred to the general meeting of the Chambers of Commerce to he held in Wellington in March, with a recommendation that a standard size of sack instead r of the present regulation of the maximum weight of contents he made compulsory for wheat, oats and barley. The grain sub-committee was instructed to frame the recommendation to be presented to the general meeting. Messrs Milling and Co., Ltd. were elected members. It was resolved to write to Mr A. Graham thanking him for-his uniform courtesy and his constant endeavour to further the requirements of the trading community of the district whle acting as station-master at Timaru.
