An avalanche in Furka Pass in the Alps overwhelmed Major Bayley, of the Royal Artillery; Lieutenant Berkeley Hill; of the Second : Middlesex; Major Meriau, of the Swiss Cavalry; and Bleur, a guide. Only Major Bayley survives. He was 50 yards higher up than his companions.
