An electoral petition was heard before Mr Dyer, S-M., against the election of Councillor Field, for tho Naungara riding of Hobson County on the ground that the roll was improperly made, that persons were disfranchised, and that tho deputy left tho booth unguarded several times. After hearing evidence tho Magistrate upset the election, granting costs £l2 14s against Field and tho returning officer. WANGAXUI, Dec. !). The electric tramways which have been installed hero at a cost of abont £45.000, will bo officially opened tomorrow. Samuel Beswick and William Botilt appeared at Court to-day charged with stealing forty-four head of cattle from Rnnanga Station, Tarawera, valued at £l9B. A man named Brewer was also arrested at Tanpo on a charge of being implicated. From information available it appears that Messrs Reed and Kecne, owners of the' station, left on a trip to England in February, and gave power of attorney to Mr Recre, solicitor, Wellington, Beswick being left in charge of the station. Reere paid a visit to the station, and as a result of information received, he communicated with tho police. Detective Hill journed to Tarawera , passing en route a mob of 44 cattki driven by Boult, who was placed tinder arrest, together with Beswick. Other charges are pending. Accused were remanded, Boult being allowed bail in two sureties of £-50 each and self in £IUO.

One of the men believed to have been concerned in the recent highway robbing was recognsed by a victim going into a hotel last night. The police were summoned and bagged two men, one only after a long chase through the streets.

A man named Dorlace tried to imitate other robbers on his own account by snatching away a watch and chain, bufc the victim resolutely pursued ami cornered him, and with assistant .secured him.

At the Magistrate's Court to-day. Joseph O'Grady, a young man. was committed for trial on a charge of assaulting and robbing John Nicol of £ t iw, and a watch and chain worth £"> 100. Claude Hamilton Maxwell and Patrick Joseph Xolan pleaded guilty to stealing a ham, and were committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Two men named William Xeal and John McCormack, who were arrested yesterday on a charge of assault and robbery, were before the Court to-day, and remanded to December 16th.
