At the new wharf berths the dredge came in contact with "several mooring chairy, and one of th<screw moorings, which gave some trouble, but these have now been removed, and as there a re fewer bouldci* to contend with, the work is proceeding more sut'nfactorilv. About 200 ft of the south berth at the new wharf site is now deepened to 50ft at 1.w., for a width of lOCft. The Taniwha had been working at the wharves and the end of the breakwater, and had lifted 990 tons. Messrs Fleming and Ferguson. Paislev. sent quotations for certain spare parts for the dredge, inquired for. total £356 IC*. —The ripidtnt engineer, recommended that rive of the articles be urdeied ; cost £258 10s. Mr Robert Duncan, chief ins|>ector of slips, wrote advising that the registered nominal hor.-j power of dredge 550 be rated from 92 to 99. to enable an engineer to qualify for the first class. After Mime correspondence on the Mibjeci. ami consideration by the engineer, the latter recommended that the lepi-ier lie iai-.<l to 117, according to Lloyd's rule. This would not cau-e any extra exih-nse to tho Boa id. Tlie dredgemaster leiommendvd that 550 be clo«ed down on L'hii.-tina> live till January 3rd. tlie extra four duv* to be worked up btdoiehand.—The i.->*idciu en gineer approved of tlw arrang<nient so far as the dredges were concerned, but it would not answer with regaid to the other employees. The engineer lecomntcnded the acceptance of Me»»M Wallace and Cooper's tendcr for l)oring and rehush'ng dredge hue ket link-. The tenderers a*ked f.7r have t-> amend their tender as they had made an error in it. tion of a "day" for charging fees, that no alteration be made in the present mode of changing, tiz.. midnight to midirght. As it is reported that the survey ship H M.S. Egeria leaves the Pacific shortly for Australia to survey the coast-line and cruise among the New Zealand Islands, that representations be made to the Minister of Marine to make a survey :( t Timaru. should any surveys be made on the New Zealand coast. That no .further action be taken in the matter of altering the tjamoon crane. Mr Chiiholm mored that the Samson crane be told on any reasonable offer beiiv seceived. —The secietary otated that the dredge had been advertised in several South Afr'can and Australian ports and in all the chief towns of Xew Zealand, and not a single offer had been received. In regard to the definition of a "'day," the secretary submitted a return from information as to the charges made at other ports. No charge was made here for Sundays or holidays.

Mr Young thought it unfair to charge a rrhip for a " day " if the vessel arrived in the evening and could do nothing till next " day.'' He supported .Mr Turnbull's suggestion that the " day" should be 24 houici from the time of arrival. They should do all they could to popularise the port. Mr Bt-sley mid that would not increase the trade of the pott; it would not add to the production of sheep or grain. This recommendation of the committee was adopted. Mr Young dirs:nt : ng. The rest of the lecommcndatioihs were adopted. SHELTER SHED. Mr liesley mentioned » published complaint about the flooring of the shelter shed. The chairman said he had not beard of it before, and the eccretary said it had not been reported to the Board thai he could remember. It was agreed to refer the matter to the harbour-master. SICK PAY'. Mr Young mentioned the-, case of thethird engineer who had been away sick for five days, and he had lis pay cut down by half. Uis mates did his work for him, and there wa& no loss of workHa thought that it was unbecoming and contemptible for a Board likft to profit by the sickness of ©no •>f their employe*s. - He would not do 6iich a thing with his own men. and did not think anyone present would. The resolution under which the pay was cut down should be rescinded or modified. The man went back to work too soon because life, pay was docked, and had to go home again. The secretary stated that this resolution was passed 22 years ago and had always been acted on.' Mr Thew said it way only intended to apply to mt.n ill for some length of time, and others had to be put on :n their place. The secretary suggested that a. lime should be fixed for'fall'par, say a week ; but members said that would not do. Mr Annitage: Why should he be paid if he did not do the work? Mr Young: Then pay the men who did the work.—That would be all rightAnd then they would hand it to their mate; it comes.to the same thing. After some discussion it was resolved to pay the third engineer full pay, for the five days ; w : th the undeietanding that all other cases be brought beforo the Board or the standing committer. Mr Manchester dissented. Mr Bowker proposed to move that the head of each Department be instructed to put on another man at once, in every case of sicknes*. This was eaid to be unnecessary and was not pressed. Accounts wore passed,, and the Board lose at 5.50 p.m.
