AN OLD RULE.
The Harbour Board yesterday some time considering the question whether an employee who falls -sick for ii few days should ie:.rivc half pay or full pay. It. appears that under ;v resolution that, was passed twoami-twenty years ago. old servant* falling ill won* to receive half pay, and '.hat (hit. rule has boeu applied in i very can' rdnce. ll k highly probable that Mr Thew was correct in saying that this rule, was intended to refer to cases in which -servant-* were ill for sonic considerable tunc; and Mr Young's characterisation of the application of the rule to a in which a man was away from hii> work for ;<■ few day,, only, as unljfcomin;: and contemptible, wart surely titling. It is ,1 pity that there should have been any occasion to bring such ;i matter before the Board, for public discussion ; yet some yood may couic out of it, in the way of causing inquiry to be made whether there are any other ancient rule* of an equally iingi-ncrou* tiaturu aiJect-ing the, relations bet«ecu the Board ;:nd itii employer*.
