FISH MARKETS.
Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, October 16. The Secretary of the Marine Department has written to the Christchurch City Council advocating the establishment of -Municipal Fish Markets at. the principal towns of the Dominion, it having been brought under the notice of the Department that such markets would be a boon :o fishermen and the public.' ensuring fishermen a fair price for fish and the consumers' supplies at a lower rate. The r«cretary asked the Council to consider the matter. The Mayor states that the Council has considered it and suspends further action until the Government has introduced legislation making it compulsory to sell all fish at Municipal Markets where «nch ' are established. The las* 'Municipal Conference made such a. recommendation, but the Government has done nothing in the matter. WELLINGTON, October 16. In reference to the Christchurch telegram concerning fish market.-- the Department's secretary (Mr Allport) states that letters have been sent ;it the direction of the Minister (the Hon. J: A. Millar) to Auckland, Wellington, and Duned : n. «s well as Chribtchurch. " For some time past." Mr Allport said. "' we have had a considerable number of complaints from fishermen who are laiher onj, of the way of the market?.: They send their fish in and get practically nothing for it. The fish goes into the hands of private deal- .. ,erj-. who_ give what they like. The matter was considered by the Department, and : t wa* agreed th3t the be*t remedy for the difficulty would be the establishment of public markets which the municipalities have power to set up under the Municipal Corporations Act. Such a market exists in Sydney, and it has bfvn a great service from the point of view of the fishermen and the pener;il publ : c alike. Tt suits both and benefits both. It is believed that what i« done in Sydney can be done here. There i* no reason why that example should not be followed."
