Mr John Burns, .President- of the Local Government Board, speaking at Tynemouth. said that no legislation relating to the right to work or ths employment, problem could be introduced this session, but by next session much more would be spent in distressed areas, and in nonpauper relief, ihan during the whole period of the Lancashire cotton famine. The police have issued a summons against Mr Will Thorne. Labour member for West Ham, on a charge of inciting the unemployed in Trafalgar Square on October 10th. to rush the bakers' shops. Mr John Burns, speaking at Newcastle, declared that he refused to be a party to panic legislation in regard to unemployment. The war. against .poverty was not a skirmish, but a long, dogged campaign, lasting perhaps a, ceututy. DISCUSSION IN THE COMMONS. A SOCIALIST SUSPENDED. LONDON. October 16. In the* Hoi**? of Commons, immediately after questions had been disposed of. Mr .Victor Grayson (Socialist), greatly excited, moved the adjournment in order to discuss the question of unemployment. The Speaker declared that ihe Licensing Bill was the first business, but Mr Grayson refused to p- rmit the discussion of the licensing question while people in the streets were starving.
