TOWN & COUNTRY.

The band contest, which has thU wt-t-k occupied so much of the attention of the people of South Canterbury; came to a successful close last evening. Detailed report 6of the proceedings yesterday, which were of a highly interesting nature, will be found on the sixth page. An owner of a parcel which was left on the public counter at the -Post Office is required. stated yesterday, as a fact worth noting, that of" the 38 medals won by soloists, etc.. at the* contest, 50 were won by players using Hawke's instruments, and the -winners at the- quickstep a'so used instruments of the same make.

A tea meeting was held in the Primitive Methodist Church yesterday, in celebration of the anniversary of the Christian Endeavour Union. There was a fair attendance, including visitors from Ashburton and elsewhere.

There was some amusement created at (he declaration of the result of the <iu;.ckctcp competition yesterday, by the behaviour of some .Indies, presumably of Ashburton, who tried to cheer, and broke do\rn into hysterical.laughter, when the Ashburtou Temperance Band was announced as the winner.

Townspeople who visited the Albury races yesterday, were profuse in their admiration of .the splendid appearance of the country oh boili sides of the line, all the. way tip. It was remarked that it has surely never looked•• better than il does, at, the present- time, its specially good- appearance being attributable in part to the rough weather experienced last winter, the soil having been thoroughly sweetened by it. There in a piece of the footpath along Wailu" Terrace, Geraldine, just 'above the stables, that badly ''requires attention. Ifc has been in a state of slimy disrepair for many months now, making tilings unpleasant, for the pedestrian. The water is oozing out- of tlk> bunk acfosn tha asphalt, which is becoming rotten. * A small grip should be made close to the fence to divert the•'watei'. an undertaking that would not involve much labour, but would add materially to the comfort- /if those tusing the, path, and also taw-the asphalt. < In connection with the playing of the massed hands at U ,e garden party on Tuesday, the supervisor, Captain Foden, rather cleverly got over what is usually rather a difficulty in the playing of nursed bands. . This is .the drums., .When three, 'four,"or moreV bamte are iria^-ied.'the three, four.'.or more.dt'ummeiS! drown, the*.brass. At ' tliV International Exhibition nt Chritstchuircli -tlierV Avai? displayed «■' serins of pictures illustrating :tha "development of colohisat T oij hrNew, Zealand;,' from' the first rough ,hut of the bush or plain land pioneer, to. the, well.', puUivaietl, fa rat. and the prosperous sheep, station. .These were the work of Mr E. W. piristmas, who was commissioned by the Government to paint tfom'jfor the inhibition. The pictures attracted a good deal of attention. They weiv afterward* lieut to form part- of the contents of the New Zealand Court, at the/; Franeo-Biiiedi in London. The artist is now in Tininru with a collection of his works Jot* and there are now on view, for a day or two only, iu the .Sophia Street Hall. There are over forty of thenr, and they comprise a great variety of subject*, chiefly of New Zealand scenery, but with some views frouii Australia and the Mother Country. The Xorth Inland, the South Island, land and sea. mountain and lake, glacier and blreamlet, have furnudied material* for Mr Chrixintas's artistic industry, and his collection is very well worth a visit.
