to Fairlie and inspected this section prior • to the bale, and he reported favourably i on it. The esiate was submitted fur sal* by the National Mortgage and Agency Company in Tiraattt on Saturday last, when Mr Craigie attended, and bought the lot which he considered would suit the Board. This he did, with the intention of passing it on to the Board ai the same price ab that which he paid for it. and lie took the risk of the Board declining to take it. Had the. Board done this, Mr Craigie would have had the land on his hands. He considered th-= chance wasoiw which should not ba niV-ceJ. and su was prepared to take the risk. There are 76j acres in the block, and the price paid was £l3 10s per acre. Yesterday wiicn the members of the Board inspected the si>e, -they were delighted with it, and decided unanimously to take Mr Craigie s place as put chaser of it. It is situated at Wiuscombe, about a. mile- and a half on the Timaru side of Fairlie. It has an altitude of 1000 feet above sea level; is nice iitiduk'iug land, witli a double- road frontage, and when on the. land yibterday members agreed that there were two ideal spots <jn it where a curative sanatorium couid erected. Some of the advantages of tlie who!-, site may be briefly summarised thus :—lt is high, with a bracing climate: it faces the i sun.; and is well sheltered from the ! south ; it has good v drainage, and good [ Mater is easily procurable; it is close to a railway station and town, and a medical man a> well as tradespeople can reach it easily and quickly. While it has all ih-.ee points to recommend it, the members of the Board, after a earful inspection, agreed that they could find nothing that w;t, not in ito favour. Mr F. K. Gillingham, mic of tlie members of the- Board. lives clu-e to tits- mu, ajid hL"> cordial approval of it carried a Jjogd deal of weight wi.h other members. .After the irupection an al fiesco meeting of the Board was held on the ground, when .Mr Ma si in proposed, Mr Butk-r seconded, and it was carried unanimously, that the Board should secure the laud, the deposit, cheque being there and then paid over.

. .Some suggestions were made as -o (he advisablencss of telling a part of the land, but if was decided to take no action in regard to thro aspect of tho matter in the meantime.

ft was agreed tha! bittldiiu;* of an inexpensive kind could be erected, and that the cost of pioviding lor consumptives in thiis way would be much less than it would have been had the Board joined hands with North Canterbury, and that the results would b.-- more satisfactory.

The land in question is a long strip containing a long spur of the gentle, downs which compose the greater part of the Strathconan estate —the- spur which bounds on the west lhe deep flat across which the highest railway embankment has been thrown, with a. gap and bridge in it, for the passage, of a creek that assuineis considerable dimensions in times of Hood ; the spur in which is the last road cutting on passing from the La.mbrood downs to the Fair-lie flat. The eastern boundary of the properly lies in (lie deep iliit above mentioned, mid this part of itwill be good grazing ground for the isamttnrium dairy in ' the driest season*. The' outlook, from the suggested building sites on cither of two rises in the spur, is-up-on a. beautiful amphitheatre of mountains, from I lie Brothers and Mt. Four Peaky on the right, round by the long Two Thumb i.iuirc with Fox's and lesser peek's, to the Kolleshy range on the left, the Hunter Llills continiuing the high land, vista far away towards the sea. Nearer a|" hand is spread out the extensive sloping area of the Faiilie basin, with its setting rif agricultural downs, and dotted with th- 1 plantations about r-ettlcrs homesteads, and latger plantations belonging to the local intlioiitiev. The sit* itself is not picturesque, though it is not tame; but the out look is a panorama of the picture-fiue. The climate of the Faiilie basin is con sidcrcd very good, and the site -*eeisrcd [or a sanatoiium enjoys the ;idv;uitng? with that of the exhilarating effect of. a wide and beautiful landscape environment.
