It "is estimated that there are over 22,000 horses in Melbourne and suburbs, and so widespread has the disease become that niore than half the animals have fallen victims. In some large city stables 80 per cent, of the horses are prostrated, and it is stated by veterinary surgeons that of the /whole of the horses working in and around Melbourne 70 per cent, are affected by the malady. Draught and stable horses are the principal sufferers. Baker?, butchers, and carters generally have betn severely handicapped by 11r< epidemic. In two or three cases undertake w have been placed in a difficulty by the illness of their horses. One was compelled to work sick beasts, and it is doubtful whether they will recover.
