The public should look upon tiie»r support of the Show as their opportunity for giving encouragement and assistance to the improvenient of the staple industries of the district ; and as a ai»tter of fact the public have to a very gratifying extent performed this duty bv attendiug the Show as visitors. ' Past experience suggests that the producers might in greater numbers take an active part iti the prodivclion of the assemblage of exhibits. The list of exhibitors is a short one, compared with the directory of the farmers and graziers of South Canterbury. Whilst it must be admitted that the preparation and transport of many classes of exhibits entail a good deal of trouble and expense, it may be conoludx-d that those who take the trouble and incur the expense find in it- a pleasure that well. re* pays them; otherwise we should not see, the s?«me men exhibiting year after year, whether they gain honours and prizes or not. The Show is made up of littles; and even- little helps.' So long as the Show maintains the standard of #nterest» that has characterised it in the, past, the public will continue 7 to give it the valued support of their patronage. <l The Show acquired a position as , the great rural festival-in the early days; it has ever since its inauguration been the one great holiday of the country districts; the one occasion upon which all classes ,by tacitt consent allow free play to the human instinct of gregariousues?, -and! town * and country meet. in the most democratic gathering of the year. The Association itself is essentially democratic. Its constitution is of the widest. Ito objects can be sulxscribed to by every resident of tlie district. Its government is ultra liberal, an<l capacity and willingness to work are the qualities looked for in its honorary - officers, and the committee, -As an honorary administrative body the committee of the Tin™ru Agricultural ami Pastoral Association is a living extaftgle of attention to duty, for its meetings have a better average at'tendance of members than perhaps any other .meeting | in TimarU. and all are apparently 1 willing to accept more or Uus onwous duliesi a* managers of the Show ; and not a of them are liberal subscribers to the prize funds. 'Their devotionto the interests of the Association deserves< not only commendation but all the encouragement «nd assistance that the public can givß them....
