ASHBURTOX, Sept. 22. .A fire totally destroyed Zetland Lodge, near the racecourse, owned by J. C. N. Grigg as a racing stable and managed by C. Giesler, at 7.45 this morning. Besides the buildings, gear and feed, three valuable racehorses, Step-up, valued at over £SOO, Restless at £550. and Interpreter at £IOO were burnt to death. The detached mens sleeping apartment was also destroyed, though the contents were saved. The origin of the fire is unknown, but when the outbreak was discovered the flames had a .strong hold of the building, and only seven out of the horses were with much difficulty rescued. Both Restless and Step-up were promising horses, and had been successful at the recent Ashburton races. There was an insurance of £4OO on the stables, and £3O on the men's room in the Liverpool, London and Globe, but no policy covered the horses, and Mr Grigg will suffer an actual loss of about £ISOO over and above the insurance.

STRATFORD, Sept. 20. . A fire at 2.30 "this morning. gutted a shop in Broadway, .occupied by A.
