State Servants.

SOME OF THE SALARIES. According to the Budget estimates this year there are, in round figures, 18,000 permanent employees of the JSt*te, whose salaries range from £3l per , year to £l2ao per year. This list, does not, however, include teachers of primary and secondary schools—a very formidable addition—neither 4000 odd railway employees, who are not on the D—-5 list, cooperative and other labourers, temporary and extra clerks and employees, nun engaged in the iitate coal mines, and inanv. others.

In 1905 Mr Herdman. asked in Parliament for a return showing (a) the total number of civil servants in the employ of the- Crown oa March 31, 1904; (b) the number of temporary clerks, and tc) the number of persons other than civil servants, temporary clerks and school teachers ; but. including men employed on pub, he works in receipt- of pay from the Crown. Tho return furnished disclosed a total of 22,739. The Government Departments since then—four years ago—have increased considerably and more casual hands have been employed. School teachers are not included in the return, the railway employees have largely in-crea.v-d, and the post and telegraph figures have gone up by over one thousand. The total number may, therefore, be given as near 40,000. Another return mipplfed at Mr Herdmau's request- gave tho total wages paid to the 22,739 employees for the year 1903 4 (again excluding StatA school teachers). The amount was £2.830,668 lis lid. With these figures some id>-a can iw fontit'd of the annual wages Ibt of the Stato at the pr.-sent time, with the additiomd nnploymrtnt given. It is also interesting to calculate the large number of people there must 1m- in the country either directly or indirvctly attadu-d by financial interest to the State.
