SUPREME COURT.
Per Press Association. PALMERSTON N., Sept, 10. Arthur Henry Woods was sentenced to the maximum penalty (seven years) at the Supreme ;€ourt this morning for assault on a seven year old girl. Accused had just completed a five years' sentence for a similar offence. Mr Justice Chapman said for the safety of the community it was necessary to imprison Woods for the longest term possible. Thos. Gleeson was charged with a breach of the Bankruptcy Act by incurring debts without any reasonable giound of expectation of paying the same. The deputy assignee produced the bankrupt's books, which showed a bad Btate of affairs. The jury returned a verdict of guilty with a recommendation to mercy on the ground of inexperience. Sentence was deferred.
