Seven thousand persons were rendered •homeless by the five at Stamboul and 50C0 buildings were destroyed.. A number of tirem.-n, and women and children perished.

HASTINGS, August 25.
Rats proved directly responsible for an outbreak of lire in the two-storied residence of Mr Morris Mason. Smoke was noticed issuing from a cupboard under the stairs'-.at 8 o'clock last night, and the. fire was promptly subdued. Under the lumber was' discovered a rat's nest, in which was an ignited box of wax vestas, bearing marks of rats' teeth.
