MACKENZIE LEASES.
Sir William Steward entirely misapprehends vhe purpose of nur numerous references to ,ihe Mackenzie loaves, if he supposes that at any time, or in the particular article of the series which he quotes, we liave desired to depreciate his devotion to the interests of his constituents in the hill comii.n'. Our only object, was to press the opinions which we are glad to find him sharing, not. 1o d'.spense even-handed credit for ineffectual attempts to get them embodied in ' th<* statute.; book. No doubt there, are many others besides Sir William whose efforts in this direction have similarly failed to receive recognition, in our columns during the last few we?ks in. which we have been ventilating the subject. '.' Mr Anstey himself would have been of this number, had it not happened that, a. ; lengthy adjournment' of the Legislative Council caused him to come south and fall into the hands of a reporter at an opportune, time. .Huß it was neither the intention of the reporter in interviewing Mr Ans'ey. nor,, we. are sure, Mr Alley's intention'in granting the interview, that, the member of 'the Legislative Council should be appreciated at. •expense of his colleague in the oilier'-Chamber.. We
were concerned to procure arguments in support, of a, certain suggestion, and we got them from Mr Anstey and from '•Hansard" report's of his speeches' io which, for ' convenience, ho referred our reporter'. "'lt '\§\i pleasure' to find that Sir William lias anticipated both Mr Anstey and ouiwelves in these arguments, and Die only regret which his letter inspires is the suggestion that we havo deliberately ignored nis action in Parliament in order to deprive hiin of the credit, for a. liberalism towards the run- ■ holders of which his Ministeiial chief' is destitute.
