TRAINING FOR ATHLETES.

To the Editor of the "T'imaru Herald." Sir,—G. W. Smith, according to a. paragraph appearing in your issue of Saturday, is now giving advice about the training of athletes thai he did not practise himself during his career as' an amateur sprinter, hurdler and footballer. Judging from my personal experience' of G. W. Smith this statement, if made by him, is what is called " hot air." I have been a competitor at most of the championship meetings of the N.Z.A.A.A. that G. W. Smith has ■ been engaged in, dating from his first appearance at Wangautii in 1898. I can assure your readers and any young athletes who may be inclined to follow G. W. Smith's advice on training, that ho did not take any risk with his chances and indulge in cigarettes and sundry beers. G. W. Smith has always taken athletics quite seriously, and in- my opinion he never did qufte come within the true definition of an amateur athlete; indirectly, successful sport was the foundation of his means of livelihood. The position he now occupies in the. a'thletic world speaks for itself. I know that G. W. Smith trained and prepared himself on the soundest of good lines, and gave close attention to clean, careful living, and no fittter man ever competed at a. N;Z. A.A.A. championship meeting than he, and a rigid corns© of cigarettes and beer did not him to win four championships at one meeting, including heats and finals. The young athlete who wants to be tho real thing, in his own particular line of sport will find it no hardship to ,leave out the cigarettes and beer, and it is a certainty that he will never be in the top class if he includes these items in his daily course. Perhaps *' our representatives at the Olympic games held' at London trained on "the lines of G. W. Smith's doctrines.—l am etc., EX-CHAMPION,
