WAIMATE HUNT STEEPLECHASE MEETING.

The annual steeplechase meeting of tho Waimato Hunt was held on Thursday on the Waimate racecourse. .The day was damp and cold, and tho attendance was consequently not so good as-a fine afternoon would have ensured."" The sport was good, and everything passed off well. There were two caees of saddles slipping round, and in both (he riders were applauded for sticking on and finishing the nice. This happened to a youth riding Karere in the first, and to Mr Parkinson in the second steeplechase. The fol-low-ing were the results: — •

The.race lay between Waitaki and Mystery, ' and a good tussle took place between them* Mr Cornelius was well cheered as the rider when Mr Rhodes presented the ; Cup to Mi- Rattray. HACK RACEj 3 sots, 1 soy; six furlongs. Mr B. P. Whitney's Slavey (Radeliffe) 1 Mr J. Murphy's Hector (Owner) ......... 2 Mr A. Rattray's Fireaway (Owner) 3 Six others started. Won easily. Ehvorthy) 3 These were the only starters. - Swagger went off with the lead, but ran off at the back of the course, and Comet lying last was unable to overtake Springbok, who, however, got in first with only a little to spare. Tavendale's Gothic (Cornelius)... 3 Four started. Butterfly took the lead half way and won easily.

Craigmoro and Brisk are entered for tho Christchurch Hunt Club's point-to-point steeplechase which takes place at Templeton to-day. The committer of the South Canterbury Jockey Club met last evening,, Present: Dr C. E. Thomas (chairman),; and Messrs Rcid, Lowry, Gresson, Smith*. Cray and the secretary, C. S. Fraser.- ~Tho' chairman reported that tho Ground Committee had the matter of a scratching-bpard in hand. A letter was Tead from Mr Mee, asking for crctis fencing to be' done, to enable him to clear the land of twitch. Tho chairman undertook to see Mr Mce and if he would consent to cancel the present lease, and the trustees would give an extended lease, the matter might be arranged. Mr H. Brinknian was."appointed kandicappcr, provided -trots arc included in the programme, it being understood" that this had to be decided by the Trotting Association. The progranium committee submitted a programme, with the stakes increased by £265 over last November meeting, and totalling £ll2O. The committee's report was; adopted, with an alternative programme, in tho event of the Trotting Association refusing a permit for trots. Mr James's offer to work the totalisator was accepted for the season 1908-1909. The ground committee reported on the works in The programme comprises handicaps of 150, 120, four of 30, two of 70, and fivei tjf 50 6ovs, a hack race of 50, and two trots of 40 sovs each. . ■< .
