MOUNT COOK.

THE TOURIST TRAFFIC. OAMARU WANTS A SHARE. At the meeting of ilia Oaiuaiit Chamber *of Commerce this week the committee set up to consider the question of fourisl traffic to..'Mount Cook* via, Oiimaru and Kurow, reported recomuieudjug—"That the mutter be brought before the Minister in charge of the Tourist Department, embodying facts and urging that the proposed route be advertised and made public through the Tourist Department similar to what is now done for the Fairlie route. Also to point out the great saving of time and new country to be covered by tourists from the south going the round trip via Kurow to Mount Cook, and returning via Tima.ru, and those from tint north going via Tiuuiru and returning through Kurow Ui Oaniaru. The Waitaki County Council to be asked for their active support and endorsement."

Mr Frascr, in moving the adoption of the report, pointed out that the distance vi;i, Kurow was practically the same, while the road from: Kurow to Pukaki was less lully than the road from Fairlie; to Fukaki, which made it an easier road for coaching. . He also pointed out that the bridge over the Ahuriri, which the Waitaki County Council are to erect at once, would be a decided advantage, as it would do away with what' was sometimes a. difficult ford. Tourists would have the advantage of going one way and returning the other, or viewing new country, and there would also bo a considerable saving of time, as it was* hoped that arrangements would be made whereby tourists could get right through from Pukaki to Oamaru in one day by arranging for the afternoon train from Kurow leaving later than at present. Mr Fraser also mentioned that Mr T. A. ; Mu'nro, coach proprietor, had signified his willingness to do anything in his power to see that all passengers got through by coach. Mr Junes seconded the Jnotion for the adoption of tho report, which was' carried. A sub-committee, consisting of Messrs Fraser, Steenson, Monsou, and Rose, was •ect up for tho purpose of giving effect to the recommendations of the Committee.
