The spectators included Lord Pbmfcet, Sir Joseph Ward, several Cabinet Ministers, and members of both Houses, and the Mayor of Auckland. Auckland won a most sensational game by-24 points to 3. • Up to the last quarter of an hour the ganie.wiis either team's and then Wellington suddenly collapsed and Auckland put on 19 points in 15 minutes. In the first spell Bater scored for Auckland, and -ft. Magee- converted. Alexander scored ah unconverted try for' Wellington, also before the spell closed. The second spell was fast and exciting for the first half hour, and then Auckland completely routed Wellington. Two or three thousand people -ytsterday witnessed the annual football matches be-, tween St. Patrick's and Wellington Colleges and between Victoria, and Canterbury Colleges. The weather was fine and some good play was shown all round, St Patrick's College beat :Wellington College by 9 to 6, and Canterbury College beat Victoria Colleges by 16' to 9. CANTERBURY BEAT SOUTHLAND. CHRISTCHURCH, August 16. • Canterbury easily defeated Southland rtsttrday- by . 22 , points ti> 5 after a fairly interesting game. The home team's backs were far too' clever for the visitors, but when it came to loose play the Southland ■ vanguard more than held their own. Glasgow kicked off. and from an ensuing, lineout the Southland forwards broke away, a free-kick relieving. Passing by the Canterbury backs gained no ground owing to the'eore tackling and the Southland forwards set up a hot attack, - Canterbury' being ultimately forced. Passing, between Fuller, . Deans and Fryer took play . into Southland's twenty-five, but. their forwards took the ball back and set. up another attack, J. McNeece almost getting over after a good run. A free kick -ultimately' relieved Canterbury. Evans broke away and Deans after a fine run passed to Fuller and the latter to Fryer who.got over, Fuller failing to convert. Fryer made a brilliant opening and passed to Burns, who after a clever run repassed to Fryer, the latter scoring under the posts. Fuller made a feeble attempt to convert. The Canterbury forwards dribbled to the Southland line and from a scrum Eathorne scored, Fuller again failing to convert. Subsequently, from a mark by Burns, Bain's kick forced Southland. Canterbury were now attacking strongly, Menzies being prominent, but free kicks relieved the visitors and the spell ended. On resuming a loose rush, by Bain gave Burns possession . and passing between Gray, Puller, Deans, Aitken and McPhail took the ball "to the visitors' line, but a forward rush relieved. Deans set Gray and Aitken off again, Broad tackling the latter when he was looking dangerous. J. McNeece kicked back and a loose rush headed by Ryan forced Canterbury. Bidland passed out to the visiting backs but P -Burns obtained possession and centred to Fuller, who scored behind the posts and kicked a goal. Pyle was prominent for a good run, but passing between Thompson, Gray and Fuller enabled the latter to again score. He however failed to improve the try. Deans, McPhail and Fuller resumed the attack, but J. McNeece kicked back and Blackham obtaining the ball, sent it out to Pyle, who after a splendid run gave Jenkins a try, which Glasgow converted. A penalty by A. McNeece was charged down and the Southland forwards controlling. Glasgow had another fruitless 6hot."- Passing between Burns, Gray, Deans, Aitken McPhail improved the home position, and Ailken and Baker. had the visitors defending. Blackham broke away, but Fryer, obtaining the ball went right through, scoring a brilliant try which Doell converted., A good rush by Fryer again pressed the visitors, Glasgow relieving, but McPhail came back and the game ended in Canterbury's favour.
