WAIMATE NOTES.

The keenest frost for some time was eperienced on Thursday morning, the ice being half an inch tihick, and many taps being frozen. The large amount of scarlatina which has been in evidence fur. some time, many of the cas.s belonging to the country, is causing anxiety among the members of the local bodies, who are endeavouring to get the drainage of the borough brought up to date. Dr Finch, who gave his views on the matter, stated that the borough was hardly large enough to go in for underground drainage, arid further that scarlatina was due more to contact than to deficient drainage. Had it been typhoid the case would -be different. " The strawberry and raspberry farms are being put in good order and,the owners look forward to a prolific year. The plants and canes are looking extremely well. The vegetables sown after Christmas have fared better than in \niost places as far as blight is concerned. The local Pipe Band intend holding their annual social on the 20th August. The proceeds- will be devoted to helping the band 'to attend the Wanganui contest. It has also been agreed to accept the invitation of the Timaru Brass Band Contest Committae to attend a Pipe Band contest to be held there, in October. The Waimae Gas Company held their annual meeting in the Borough" Council Chambers on Wednesday night. It was reported among, other things in the circulated' balance and report, that 2,500 new "shares had been taken, up, 1075 at par and the balance at a premium of 2s 6d per-share. , There are 209 meters and 62 street lamps in use. The gas sold was 3,064,157 feet. The profit and loss account showed a credit balance of £434 2s 2d, and from this itTwas proposed to pay a -dividend of 5 per cent, and, a bonus of £6 and .£4 to the manager and his assistant. Hikiroa played .at the show ground resulted in a very stubbornly fought game, Zealandia proving victors by 16 points to, nil. The Zealandia'team thus win'the silver cup presented by Mr Goltman. The, match-between the school team and the ! Taniwha was won by Taniwha by 13 .points to 3.' ' The boys put up a very stubborn resistance: Both games were very willing.
