CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.

(To the, .Editor .of .the. " Timaru -Herald.'')

Sir, —There is mention of a branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals being formed in > Timaru, but I think the evil lies deeper at the root than- any punishment of individual- cases can reach. If Bible teaching, is ignored in the schools the law of " doing to others" should be a leseon taught and enforced, even if only in self-defence, for a certain and sure; -punishment awaits those who take delight in cruelty. The creatures all lost paradise through man and woman and it. might possibly be that we may in some measure regain it, by continual kindness to them; ;• they look to us for all they -need and we are not very mindful of their comfort W a rule. The clergy do not upeak of such trivial matters, bub ib may be 'more practical than they imagine, and the. world -would be a bet er place if consideration of the creatures held a place in their discourses. A- man may be had. up for cruelty, but does it change liia nature? Do the ahimals under his power suffer; leks. from him afterwards These affairs are overlooked in the' topics of the day, buti 1 think a h'gher socialism. will 'come wh'to 'the rights of thtee creatures will (,be respected and humanity reap the reward! It was my privilege to be 'acquainted with a man high in- the esteem of the colony, who instructed ma on thiar subjedt, ; a nd so I venture to write these ' words!-—I am etc., . • , s - / . ' justice.
