A NEWSPAPER SUMMONED

PALMERSTON N., July 30.
The attention of the police having been directed to the sporting notes of "Asmod«,us," published in the "Manawatu Daily Times" on the 18th in-st., Mr Hoben, as proprietor,' has received, a summons under the Gaming Act setting out that he published a'suggestion as to the probable result of a certain horse'race to be run at Trentham, the. 6aid suggestion being in the words following—Tropics of the Turf— To-day's Trentham Meeting—"Sir Frisco has been doing: . soma good work on track and should be much fancied in the Parliamentary Handicap to-day. Dawn and Seaman should also be handy when the winning post is reached —contrary ta theVorm of the statute in such case made and provided." Of the three horses mentiuueu, sir Frisco won and Seaman and 'Dawn provided second and third, respectively, in the Parliamentary Handicap. This" is the first prosecution of the kind under the-new Gaming Act.
