TIMARU BOROUGH COUNCIL

The Timaru Borough. Council meet this evening, and among the business to be done -will be the adoption of the officers' reports that- were read at. Friday's nieetiiiij of the- general committee. - OVERSEER.

Mr A. Beswick reports on tho effects of the heavy rain, that cleaning up after tho flood lad been put in hand, and carting sukigle to many streets to enable people ■fco get about'. The worst place for flooding wa3 Beverley Gully, where a 12-inch pipe was laid under the main road and an 18-inch under the railway. By running an inch pipe through he found the 12-inch pipe was choked with a couple of bricks and other rubbish. These were cleared out by means of the fire hose. The 12-inch pipes appeared t'o be small for this gully, and he would watch it in the next rain. 'Xho filling in Grey Road goes down with every rain, and this time had been filled up again with clay from the drainage works. The filling in Hassell street had stood well. Very little street formation could be done at present, and the men i been employed in extending the proni..ade at Caroline Bay. This work had Tequired some sand scooping, for which extra team* were engaged. The end of tho Whales Creek invert was broken off by the flood Tinder-scouring it. It has been refixed at a lower level and joined up with the rest, and some damage'done to the walling of the new plot had been repaired. The children's bathing sheds have been shifted and raised a couple of feet to prevent flooding. They should have » coat, of paint. Messrs Mara had almost completed the painting of the rotunda and eeaw, and had made a moat satisfactory job of it. Tha balance of wheels required for bathing vans had been got and fitted, and the vans would be delivered to the Bay this week. He proposed as soon as possible to mix material for asphalting Stafford Street North, and to start remetalling as/ eoon as tho quarry and roads were fit for hauling. Waterworks—-Mr Beswick reported that he had inspected a considerable portion of the race and tho dam, and found that on the whole the headworks had stood the strain of thei late floods without sustaining any damage. The late flood ran Bf. over the intake pipe at the dam, or within 12 inches of the highest flood recorded since the dam was made. The race, considering the nature of the ground along Mt. Horrible, stood the test very well. Tho slip along Mt. Horrible would be finished this week. The slip at Ward's zigzag had baen temporarily repaired with 12-inch pipes. Permanent repairs would .be put in hand as soon as preparations could be made for the work. The protective works along tho river banks proved of much service, and in no case was any damage done. More protection was, however, needed on account of the river changin, and at Tycho road some willows should be anchored in front of the present ones. A travelling; hut was required for repair work, and a shelter was wanted at the back door of the house at Adair. Tha extra labour of the race had been reduced to four men. During the last twelve months' there had been, many applicants for supplies in Kensington, and extra pipes had been laid for them. The 4-inch main had been extended along James street, and he now recommended that it, be carried along Flinders street, to dispense with the old temporary service from High street. In connection with this all those supplied from temporarv taps should be given notice that this "class of service will be discontinued at the end of September next', as all houses wishing to have a supply can now be connected direct. SANITARY INSPECTOR. Mr J. R. Smith, Sanitary Inspector, submitted hia usual report on house-to-liouse visitations in the west and north west streets of the Borough, and on notices given to abate nuisances: Drains on eight premises, and plumbing in two had been.inspected and tested. Two cases of infectious disease had been reported, one of scarlet fever and one of erysipelas. Two rooms in a house in Stafford street north and one in the hospital bad been fumigated after such cases.
