TIMARU, JULY 17th, 1908. (Before Mr C. A. Wray, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. A first offender pleaded guilty to being drnnk within the Theatre Royal on Thursday evening and was fined 6s and costs. RAILWAY BY-LAWS. B. B. de Loo/.e was charged with having boarded a train while in motion on July 6th., this being an offence under the railway by-laws. He pleaded guilty.. Sub-: Inspector Green stated that defendant arrived at the station with the intention of travelling by a certain train, but he was too late and jumped on as the train was moving away, from the platform. 'His Worship pointed out the danger of this, practice and inflicted a penalty of 10s and costs. BOROUGH BY-LAWS. B. B. de Looze was also charged with cycling without lights on fhe night of July 'llth. He pleaded guilty 'and'was fined 5s and costs. - A boy 15 years of nge, S. Williams by name, admitted having ridden a cycle on a footpath in Church street. The charge prompted His Worship to say that boys and girls were the worst offenders in this class of misdemeanour and there was no reason why they .should not be treated in the same way as others. A fine of 2s 6d was imposed. Ellis Jilills did not appear to answer a charge of path-riding in Church street, but Constable Harvey's evidence was, sufficient to warrant His Worship in fining defendant 5s and costs. PROHIBITION ORDER, A prohibition order was gi anted against a Timaru man, who consented to the step. TEMUKA, FRIDAY, 17th July. • (Before Messrs Jas. Blyth and G. M. Gentlemun, J.IVs.) ALLEGED ROBBERY. George Moore was charged with having on Bth July, ll<oß, at Temuka, stolen from the person of 'James McMeeken six • £5 notes, two sovereigns and ten shillings in silver contained fir a leather purse and the 'properly of Janus McMeeken, Air S. (1. Raymond appeared r for accused, who' pleaded not gtufty. Constable Gillespie conducted the case for the prosecution.

James McMeekin stated that he was ft blacksmith employed at I'lahers. On Wednesday morning, Bfh July, there- was a flood in Tenmka, and in consequence no work wis done at the shop. He went up 10 town with the above moneys in his possession, intending to put £3O in the post of/ice. He met his mates on the way, Kobevt Duncan and Hugh Craig. Had a, whisky a; the Crown ami prodded nuni there to the Wallingford, passed the post office, but did not bank the money. Gould "find no trace and reported the matter to the police. Couid iiofc say if accused was aware lie possessed so much cash. Considered him an acquaintance. Had not seen Moore since the day of the robbery. -Michael Fitzgerald gave evidence of the presence of the accused at.his hotel with the other names mentioned on the day of question. ltobert Duncan corroborated McMeeken's evidence and related the incidents of the day and what happened in the hotel. Constable Gillespie gave evidence as to the reported theft by MeMeeken and his interview with Moore. Considered his ;expianation quite •unsatisfactory and arrested him on'.suspicion. • He first ■ denied any kiiow.t-dge of the.theft, bat when being arrested offered to hand"the grt-ater por'tion of the. money over. The- purse produced .was identified by MeMeeken ur his properly. Constable Maloney gave evidence in support of the arrtßt and relative to the in eiview with M/ore.

Mr Raymond did not cross-examine any of iho -witnesses and stated accused reserved his defence. . The Bench then committed .accused for trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court at Timaru. Bail was allowed in a bond of £loo and two sureties of £SO each.
