SOUTH CANTERBURY HARRIERS. The crotts-country race of the above club which was postponed from last Thursday was decided yesterday from Saltwater Creek. The day, which broke beautifully fine, was marred by a hail storm at midday, and l-iin followed, which made the selected country extremely heavy. A start was made at 3.35 p.m. the rain having kept the marksmen back in the flagging outi of the course. So as to place outside competitors on the same footing the trail was not disclosed so every competitor was on the same fooling. From the south side of the lagoon flags were placed at a point in Mr G. Talbot's property, thence an easterly direction through Mr A. E. Kerr's, then a sharp turn led on to the Beacon-sfield road, and t*o the main road, in ail a capital eras country run of four inihs. The going was very heavy, so fast time's were out of the question. Tho limit man (Gcancy) was sent off and at intervals the remaining 18 starters until K. W. .Moore, who left amid cheers, set out at a fast bat. His effort was particularly good, for vlie breasted tho mark first. Tho following arc the places of the finish : S. W. Tho first four wero fairly ol<*.c together. A large crowd of spectators- viewed th« raco, Major Lindsay being among (how-pr«s-.ent. The thanks of competitors are due to Messrs I'earce. Mans! ml and Bowkett, tally judges, and to Messrs F. J. Dunn, Goodwin, and Walshe who acted as marksmen. A pleasing feature of (ho event was tho large number of starters who ran right through although they could not all gain places.
