Redmond that the Earl (if Crowe, Secretary of State for tin* Colonics, had given Mr Deakin to understand that the Australian naval defence schema presented considerable- difficulties from fhe standpoint of naval ad- ■ ministration. Mr " MeKenna reiterated his statement of Monday, to the effect that.there was need for careful deliberation of the Commonwealth ■ propoisalK. He promised Mr Austen Chiimherlaiu that if .possible he . would ' lay on the table the papers referring to the matter. STATEMENT BY MR DEAKIN. .MELBOURNE, July 16. Mr Deakin says that Mr Mckenna's i.takment in reference to the Australian naval defence scheme that the Admiralty k i content'with ihe pm-.ent arrangement, mtiivt refer only to the currency of the present, agreement,- and not lo any period ; after its expiry. If a proposal \vere made for the renewal of the agreement as it stanils:, he was •sure, that the Admiralty would want to say a good deal.
