COURSING

TIMARU JULY MEETING.

Patrons—Messrs A. S. El worthy and AY. Hav; prejident—Mr 11. Howard; secretary—J. H. Rodgers; judge—T. Kett; slipper—T. Kearns. The South Canterbury Coursing Club ojiened the second meeting of the 1908 et-ason yesterday, on the Plumpton, Washdyke. "Although the weather iooked very threatening on Tuesday evening and the indications pointed to a wet day yesterday morning broke fine and i-iear, but with a cold breeze blowing off the smowvlad ranges. But in spite of the. day being so tine thu attendance of the public was not large. Those, however, who went out to Washdyke were favoured with, some good sport; the majority of the hares were good strong ones, and those which were killed, although they went well at first, seemed to become tired out through being in too good condition. Contrary to anticipations the wetness oi the ground did not hinder the going of the dogs very much, consequently some keen courses were witnessed. For tms meeting the Club introduced a new judge, Mr T. Kett, of Dunedin, who appeared to give very general satisfaction in his adjudications. . He was provided with a high stand about half-way tip the Plumpton, this provision having been found necessary owing to the wet ground precluding the* practicability of the judge riding on horseback. Two or three persons took turns at the slipping and between them gave one or two bad slips, but it seems that the fault of this was due more to the gear need than to the slippers; once or twice the straps broke and the man in charge of course lost control of the dogs. Mr J. H. Rodgers conducted a refreshment booth on the ground. To-day the coursing will be continued, and the finals of the two stakes, the Maiden and the Open, wilL be Uecideu. The following uie results:—

•ialvator broke away from the. slips and was given, no points until the Tracker joined him. The latter then did the working and was awarded major points. Merry Iksb showed superior pace to her rival, Merry Legs, and did all the working, though Merry Legs secured the hare from a turn made by the winner. Lucy Hinton was cruite outclassed by Wirarou, which fullowed up from every turn, though she could not reach the hare. Fardowner secured the lead and maintained it throughout ; he- got a smart turn near the escapes before the other dog could catch- up. Keepsake beat Dominion Day by superior pace, a smart wrench and a kill, fcjhe was also smarter on the turns. The course between Kilbunw and Gold Crown was not very exciting,- the former led practically the whole way and secured a couple of turns before the hare escaped. The Manxman worked his hare well, leading up and getting in a turn or two and finally killed the hare after it was tripped up" by Victory. War God and Tui had a tine course with a strong hare and both doge worked splendidly, but on the whole Tuj showed superiority in the turns. Ilousemaoter, although a big heavy dog, was too fast for Coldstream and working closely drove puss to cover. The difference in points between Victor and Wilberforce were very little, both doge, working well, though to some it seemed that Wilberforce wars the better dog. Dusky Lad and Murmur had an abortive course, the latter getting away with part of the slips and the former running straight for the hare and killing it. In the second attempt Dusky Lad led by a street and after one turn "secured the hare beforo Murmur could catch up. Floradora, the favourite-, was far too good for Helen's Baby, both in speed and working, and it was only occasionally after a tutn that the beaten.

bitch took a turn. Pawa and Valkyre had a short course; the former led np and, taking a couple of turns, secured his prey. Sockburn Boy led most of the way from Scotland Yet and showed ability in the turns, finally capturing the quarry ckse to the escapes. Second Eound. Tracker beat Merry Bess. Fardowner beat WiraToa. Keepsake beat Kilburne. Tui beat Manxman. Housemaster beat Victor. Floradora beat Dusky Lad. Pawa beat Sockburn Boy. Tracker led up, but when near the hare Merry Hiss got, a go-by. After a, tuni or two Tracker secured a kill and won the couitie. Wiraroa and Fardowner had a good hard course, in which the latter showed better pace and turning ability and finally secured the hare close to the escapes. Keepsake led from Kilbume, did all the work and captured the hai\> before going half-way. Kilburne appeared to be waiting for a favourable turn. Tui led up and though she was given" a go-by secured all the turns and made a good (showing against a strong hare. Housemaster beat Victor mainly by securing the quarry, but he was aliead m pointis in the lead up. Floradora easily beat, Husky Lad; she led up, gained the tinst turn and another one or two afterwards, and then the kill. Husky Lad was unfortunate enough to fall twice. Pawa, in 'his course with Sockburn Boy, was winning all the time, though lie gave a go by before the hare «;it> jvachciJ. OPEN STARK. Fiist Hound.

Mr G. G. Todd's f and w d -Admiration beat Air W. Fold's blk and w d Royalist. Mr B. Smith's (iih) f d Darlinghurst beat Mr A. Coulson's Jimmo. , Mr B. Royalist an-.l Admiration alternately took the leads, but on the turns the later made more points than toe former, Jimmo was too fast for Dariinghtn-ht mul twice ju6t missed the hare before the laiter secured it near tli« ttscapes. Golden Days did the bulk of the leaning up, an 1 working in the touire with Biou he i. Two other dogs, Jimmo and Darlinghur.it, which had just run, siippcl ih-.-ir iolit>:i-, and joined the two coursing, with the iesult that the four were too much for ilie .hare. The major points were awarded to Golden Days. Reunion led a street from Awapuni, and was awarded the couiko, though Awapuni got a kill from one of Reunion's turns. Major Timor ran a bve.
